17,575. Maher, J., Pfaff, H. E., Campbell, L. L., and Terry, T. July 29. Chain wrenches.-Relates to pipe wrenches of the kind comprising a serrated gripping-surface acting in conjunction with a chain. The toothed block 5 is slidably mounted in the end of the handle 1 and its shoulders are engaged by cams 9 pivoted on the pin 8 and projecting from a lever 10 connected to the chain 11, whereby, during the operation of the wrench the block is forced outwardly with sufficient force to bite into the pipe or the like. The locking of the chain is effected by a pawl 18 pivoted on a pin 19 in a slot 12 and provided with a concave lower end 20 adapted to engage one of the chain pins or rollers and hold the adjacent links against a surface 15 on a block 13 shaped to conform to the configuration thereof or that the pressure is borne by the block and links and only to a small extent by the chain pins or rollers. A blade spring 21 maintains the pawl in engaged or disengaged position.
