Abstract

15,379. Blake, L. J. B. July 1. [Addition to 11,289/11.] Working-fluid supply. -Relates to improvements in combustionproduct turbines of the kind described in the parent Specification, and consists in mixing the combustible and the air after compression and causing spontaneous combustion and substituting air for hydraulic pressure behind the pistons in the explosion chambers. Explosion chambers 5, 6, 7 and air - compressing cylinders 2, 3, 4 contain pistons connected in pairs by rods 22, 23, 24. Each of the air - compressing cylinders communicates with the adjacent explosion chamber of the next pair by way of a check-valve 14. Oil is supplied under pressure from a reservoir 38 by way of pipes 41, 42, 43 through valves 17, 18, 19 to the explosion chambers. A constant pressure is maintained at the back of the pistons in the explosion chambers by compressed air conveyed from a reservoir 34 by way of pipes 31, 32, 33. Atmospheric air is admitted to the cylinders 2, 3, 4 by check-valves 8, 9, 10. The flow of combustion products from the explosion chambers to the turbine is controlled by valves, which, together with the oil-admission valves, are operated by the reciprocating rods 22, 23, 24 through suitable tappet gearing. A pipe 51 enables an initial charge of compressed air to be admitted to the cylinder 6 for starting the turbine. The pairs of compression and explosion cylinders with the attendant details are operated in succession in the same manner as described in the parent Specification.
