Abstract

214,680. Packham, A. J., Dale, C. B. Mitcalfe-, and Barron, A. A. W. Dec. 21, 1922. Working-fluid supply ; motor power plant.-Separate or interconnected pairs of internal-combustion engines supply combustion products and steam either at different points on the circumference of the first stage of a turbine or at different stages. Each combustion chamber 2, Fig. 2, contains a piston 1 which actuates a piston 52 of an air compressor 5, from which air is delivered to a valve 11 controlling the inlet port 9 and actuated either by the air pressure or by a cam-shaft 17 which is driven from a bracket 19, Fig. 5, fixed to a rocking beam 8 connecting the pair of piston-rods 51, Fig. 2. Water is circulated through the turbine and the cylinder jackets and regenerators 24, 28, Fig. 7, through which the exhaust gases pass, by pumps 6 actuated from the piston-rods 51. The steam generated passes to a drum 25, which may be replaced by a boiler, and thence by pipes 14, 14a to inlet passages 141, controlled by a piston 111 on the shaft of the valve 11 and to a separate turbine nozzle 26, Fig. 2. Fuel pumped into the cylinder by a pump 21 actuated from the shaft 17 is exploded and forces the piston 1 downwards ; at the end of the stroke the gases pass through the port 3 to the turbine 41, compressed air enters through the port 9 while steam, admitted beneath the piston, assists the return of the piston by the rocking beam 8 due to the explosion in the second cylinder. At the end of the upstroke, the steam passes through the passage 3 to the turbine. When separate cylinders 2 are used, the instroke of the piston may be obtained by connecting the piston rod to a crank on a fly-wheel shaft or by having two cylinders in line, the pistons being connected by a rod.
