Davits; boat raising, lowering, and disengaging gear.-The davit frame 1 pivoted at its lower end 5 to the side of the ship is moved outboard by a pivoted rod 9 attached to a slide 16 which works on a flanged athwartship guide 11. The rope 16 operating the slide passes round sprocket-wheels 14, the inboard one being carried in bearings in a winch frame. The lowering-tackle &c. is suspended from the head 2 of the davit frame and carries a tumbling-hook 34 which engages with a hook 33. A plate 31 beneath the hook 33 carries a rod 32 which is guided in a vertical tube 35, and is connected by four chains 26 to the strengthening- bands 29, 30, which embrace the boat and extend to the gunwales. In a modification, a central band only is used, the two other chains being connected to fore-and-aft posts. The tumbling hook overbalances and releases the boat when the latter is waterborne.
