Abstract

Starting.-The compressed air from a chamber e normally passes through an atomizer h and sprays the fuel into a chamber l between the atomizer and the cylinder, but at starting the air may be admitted direct to the chamber l and cylinder without passing through the atomizer by moving the spraying-valve g beyond its normal spraying position in order to uncover a by-pass r. In a modification, Fig. 3, a starting-valve v may be combined with the spraying- valve s and valve t which separates the chamber l from the cylinder. The chamber e, which is normally charged with compressed air from the cylinder through a non-return valve b during the compression stroke, may at starting be charged with compressed air from the starting-tank, into which air has previously been pumped either from the cylinder through valves b, e<1>, or from a separate compressor.
