Helical springs.-A buffer spring for the recoiling barrel of an automatic rifle comprises a tube C surrounding the recoil spring B and formed with a helical slot C' which does not extend to the ends of the tube. The pitch of the slot C' is preferably greater than that of the recoil spring B.
