Propelling; planes and the like, construction of. - In paddlewheels of the kind having blades which are rotated backwardly on their axes by bevelgearing and radial shafts, means are provided for altering the phase of the feathered blades. Arms 2 a r e rotated by the wheel 15 on a shaft 1 and carry the free spindles 13 of the blades. At the end of each spindle is a bevel-wheel 11 gearing by a radial shaft 9 with a bevel-wheel 7 fixed on the shaft 1. By slacking the set-screw 1<a> and applying a lever to the squared end 12 of the shaft 1, the wheel 7 can be rotated to alter the phase of the feathering action. In a modification, the shaft 1 rotates with the arms 2 and the wheel 7 is adjustably fixed to the bearing 6. As shown, the blades are formed with spring-pressed louvers 4. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of two such paddle-wheels for steering by the differential alteration of the phase; this subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
