Actuating.-In a device for producing intermittent flashes of light, the gas passes through a duct c into a diaphragm chamber, the diaphragm being connected to a flat spring d supported at both ends. The diaphragm is depressed by the gas pressure, the spring passing from a single curve to a double curve and then again to a single curve but to the opposite side, when it springs into the position shown by the lower dotted line. The valve a closes the main gas supply, and gas passes from the diaphragm chamber to the burners under the influence of the spring-loaded diaphragm until the spring d is moved into its highest position. The periods during which the valve openings are closed may be adjusted by attaching the supporting rod of the diaphragm and the valve-rod to different points of the spring. Regulating- screws f are provided for the burners.
