An auxiliary diaphragm f and valve o are provided for controlling the supply of gas to a main diaphragm p, which operates the burner mechanism. Normally, the pressures above and below the diaphragm f are equal, the gas passing to the diaphragm chamber h from the supply pipe a through a pipe b and also through a throttle valve u and chamber g. With a rapid increase of pressure in the mains, the diaphragm f and the valve o are lifted before the pressures in the chamber h are equalized, and gas passes into the chamber k to operate the burner mechanism l, m, r through the diaphragm p. The valve n is opened, and the burner is supplied through the pipe d. By means of a throttle valve x in the chamber k, the gas is allowed to escape after actuating the diaphragm p. A gas chamber g is provided to increase the sensitiveness of the auxiliary diaphragm f. The device may be arranged for an inverted incandescent gas light.
