Abstract

13,635. Spencer, A. June 7. Regulating or controlling.-The vacuum existing in one chamber, pipe, or vessel is arranged to control the vacuum in a second chamber, pipe, or vessel through the medium of a diaphragm or its equivalent which is operatively connected to a valve in the motive-fluid supply-pipe of the ejector producing the vacuum in the second chamber &c., the arrangement being such that an increase in the primary vacuum effects a corresponding increase in the secondary vacuum. The invention is described in connexion with smoke and ash consuming apparatus such as is described in Specifications 9207/04, [C l a s s 51, Furnaces, &c.], and 11,456/06. The vacuum produced in the pipes 70, 69, 22 of the smoke-consuming apparatus by a steam - jet blower 21 is regulated in accordance with the vacuum existing in the smoke-box 66 through the medium of a diaphragm, Fig. 2, subjected on its lower face to the smoke-box vacuum through the nozzle 67, pipe 65, and passage 9, and operatively connected to a valve 11 in the supply pipe of the blower 21. A gauge 72 indicates the difference in the two vacua. The diaphragm is composed of thin rubber or oiled silk held between metal plates 2 and is subjected to atmospheric pressure on its upper face. The valve 11 is formed as a donble-beat valve with valve bodies or disks of different diameter. The rods of the diaphragm and valve are connected through the medium of a lever 46 pivoted at 47; and a spring 51 of adjustable tension normally tends to keep the valve closed. In order that the smoke-consuming apparatus may operate when there is no vacuum in the smoke-box, the valve is adapted to be permanently held open to some extent by adjustable means such as a screw 58 adapted to depress the lever 46.
