Abstract

21,088. Jones, C. J., and Still, W. M. Oct. 6. Lighting and extinguishing gas. - A gas valve, controlled by the pressure in the supply pipe in such a manner as to open a passage to a main burner and close a passage to a pilot burner when the full pressure is on and to perform the reverse functions when the pressure is reduced, is constructed as shown in section in Fig. 2. The inlet pipe b leads to a chamber d closed at the top by a diaphragm e of thin metal, oiled silk, or leather. The diaphragm carries a slotted tube p supporting valves n, o of rubber, leather, &c., which control oppositely situated apertures in a block h which projects through the slot of the tube p. The upper passage in the block h leads to the main outlet c ; the other passage j leads, as shown in plan in Fig. 5, to a passage k connected to the pilot burner. High pressure in the pipe b lifts the diaphragm e against a spring u so as to open the way to the main burner and close the passage j. The pilot flame is however kept alight by reason of an aperture l, Fig. 5, which is adjusted by a screw w so that the passage k receives just sufficient high-pressure gas for the purpose. Another screw v controls the amount of gas. admitted to the pilot passage when the low-pressure passage is open to the chamber d. The device is specially applicable for use on railway trains.
