Abstract
18,888. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. Aug. 22. Ordnance breech mechanism. - Relates to firing-mechanism of the type described in Specification 29,929/10, and consists in improved means for transmitting motion from the breechactuating mechanism to the lock-casing. To the sliding member F, which is operated through the link D' by the breech-actuating mechanism, is pivoted a pair of links E having toes E<1Î> engaging inclined guides a<1>, a<2> on the lockcasing A. As the member F slides to the right, the casing A receives a slight rearward movement, owing to the co-operation of the inclined surfaces e<2> on the links E with the guides a<2> on the casing, whereby the used primer is extracted from the vent axial, and a new primer is extracted from the magazine C by an undercut groove on the front surface of the casing similar to that described in the before-mentioned Specification. Shoulders e<Î> on the links E then engage fixed stops B<Î>, causing the links to turn on their pivot e, and, through the guide a<2>, to force the casing rearwards along the guides b<Î> until its motion is checked by a projection on the casing entering a recess F<2> on the member F. Continued motion of the member F slides the casing A to the right until the new primer dislodges the old one and takes its place. The motion of the casing is then reversed until it strikes the guide b<Î>, whereupon the casing is urged forward, to insert the new primer into the vent axial, by the links E, which are caused to rotate in the reverse sense by the engagement of their extensions EX with the stops B<Î>. During the initial motion of the links E, guide-surfaces e'X thereon, which are preferably steeper than the guide - surfaces e<2>, co-operate with projections a<1Î> of the striker, effecting a quick retraction. The rotation of the primer magazine C is produced in a manner similar to that described in the before-mentioned Specification.
