Abstract
484,235. Automatic guns. WIMMERSPERG, H. Jan. 20, 1937, No. 1673. Convention date, Jan. 22, 1936. [Class 92 (ii)] A double-barrel machine gun has a movable barrel 2, Fig. 1, which is fired at the end of its backward movement and another barrel 3 pre. ferably stationary which is fired when the barrel 2 reaches its forward position, means being also provided to feed the cartridges to the two barrels. Further, a long extension member 2a of the movable barrel 2 guides the cartridges to the moving barrel and engages the striker 8 to fire the cartridge in the other barrel 3. In the form shown in Fig. 1, after the fixed barrel 3 has fired, the tapped gases act on a piston 2g on the barrel 2 to move this barrel rearwards over the cartridge II against the action of a return spring 4. The extension 2a of the barrel 2 is furnished with a notch 2r to lock the tilting breech block 5 and a projection 2k which engages the tilting breech block 9 to unlock it from the notch 1r and move it rearwards to extract and eject the cartridge from the barrel 3. The barrel 2 in its rearward movement loads and locks the breech and fires when the firing pin 6 strikes the rear casing. The barrel 2 then moves forwards the projection 5k unlocking and retaining the breech block 5 and the projection 2k moving the breech block 9 forwards to lock the breech and fire the cartridge I in the barrel 3. The cartridges are fed to the barrels by ordinary box magazines feeding horizontally at the side of the gun. Figs. 3 and 5 show a modification in which the cartridge feed is from a double-row belt 26 formed of hinged metal links. The belt is advanced step by step by feed and retaining pawls on a feed slide 20 which is reciprocated vertically by the engagement of a pin 20z with a groove 2n in the barrel extension 2a. The cartridges II from one row are pushed laterally from the belt to feed the barrel 2 by a spring-controlled lever 17 pivoted at 18 and operated by a link 15 engaged by the barrel extension 2a when it starts to move rearwardly. The barrel 3 is fed by a projection on the breech block 9 which engages directly with the cartridge I in the other row of the belt. To take up recoil and store energy for the return of the barrel 2, a spring buffer 13 is provided in addition to the return spring 4.
