Abstract

12,238. Burns, R., and Burns, N. May 20. Fixed-abutment type;' cooling parts; working- fluid supply; packing drums, vanes, &c.-The shaft 24 of an internalcombustion engine carries two rotors 21, 22, which work in casings 1, 2 separated by a partition 7, the casing 2 comprising the suction and compressing chambers of the engine, the casing 1 comprising the explosion and exhaust chambers. Each rotor carries outwardly - sliding spring-pressed vanes 25, which co-operate with fixed abutments 19 having spring-pressed packing-pieces 37, and the compressed charge is delivered into the explosion chambers through recesses 45, 44, Fig. 3, in the rotors 22, 21, when these recesses register with ports 46 in the partition 7. The two sets of abutments in the adjacent casings 1, 2 are relatively staggered. The casing 1 and the partition 7 are provided with water-cooling chambers 47, 48, 50, and water is circulated through the interior of the rotors 21, 22 by means-of passages in the shaft and the hubs, and by the baffles 85. As the vanes 25 slide in and out, air is admitted and exhausted behind them through annular grooves 86 in the rotor sides, and ports 87 in the casing ends. The tips of the vanes and the sides of the rotors are packed by pieces 32, 39, 40.
