Abstract

17,970. Coonan, J. V. Aug. 7. Movable - abutment type; packing vanes; working-fluid supply. - In a rotary internalcombustion engine, the casing is divided into two chambers A, A<1> by a partition, the charge being compressed in the first chamber A, which houses the piston drum B and rotary abutments C, C<1>, and delivered through ports e<1>, e, located respectively in the end plates of the abutments and in the adjacent partition plate E, Fig. 3, into the second chamber A<1>, which houses a similar piston drum B' and rotary abutments C, C<1> and is provided with sparking-plugs G and exhaust ports H. The abutments in the two chambers A, A' are connected by keys d<3>, Fig. 3, and are geared with the common piston shaft a by external toothed wheels. Each piston drum carries two vanes b, b<1> which are packed by spring-pressed pieces b<2>, b<3>, b<4>, b<5> having bevelled ends and arranged as shown in Fig. 6. In a modification, only one rotary abutment is used for each piston drum.
