Abstract

15,907. Stercq, R. July 2. Movable - abutment type of the kind in which one of two series of pistons is fixed in the annular casing, while the other series rotates, and at a later phase in a rotation the first series rotates, while the second series is fixed. Each series of pistons is locked alternately to the fixed axle and the rotary casing by the same locking devices. Alternatively, the casing may be fixed, while the axle rotates, or the casing and axle may both rotate but in opposite directions. Two annular chambers are formed by means of a casing 1, Fig. 3, mounted on a hollow fixed axle 6, through which the explosive mixture is admitted by ports 42 into the chambers. The chambers are provided with rings 2, 3, 4, 5, each carrying four pistons, and the rings and pistons are alternately fixed to the casing and the axle by a series of four sliding bolts for each ring, as shown in the development of the casing in Fig. 4. The bolts 21, 22 ... 35, 36 slide axially into engagement with stops or recesses in the casing or the axle according to the position of the corresponding rings and attached pistons. Each annular chamber has two inlet ports 42, Fig. 1, two ignition plugs 44, and two exhaust ports 43, the cycle of operations being admission, compression, ignition, and exhaust in the usual way. Fig. 5 shows a view of a sliding bolt. The ports are arranged so that the cycle of operations is oneeighth of a revolution later in one chamber than in the other, to avoid a dead-point during the sliding of the bolts, and an explosion occurs in one chamber, when the suction stroke has already begun in the other chamber, to avoid overheating. The rings may be enlarged to form the annular chambers themselves; the present casing then acts merely as a fly-wheel, the various ports and ignition plugs being carried by the axle. Any number of chambers and of pistons may be used, and the engine may be used as a two-stroke engine employing compressed air, steam, &c.
