9147. Beaumont, P. E. April 12. Staging, suspended.- Builders' and painters' cradles suspended by ropes &c. from overhead beams, are constructed of side sections 7, 8 telescoping on central sections and connected together to move simultaneously in or out. The side sections are operated either by hand or by gearing. In the former case, the outer ends of the sections are connected to the inner ends of the opposite sections by ropes 11, 13 passing over pulleys 11<a>, 13<a> carried by the pulley tackle 2, and over guide-pulleys 12, 14 on the floor of the central section. When the sections are operated by gearing, the ropes 13 are wound on a drum on the same axle as the pulleys 14, and the inner ends of the sections are connected by ropes 13<x>, 11<x> to a winding-drum 19 operated by a hand-wheel 20 and chain 21, the ropes 13<x> passing over the pulley 14. The side sections are guided on the central section by rollers 17, 18 carried by the side sections and central section respectively. The hand - rails 22, 23 may be tubular, and may be constructed of reinforced papier mache, wood, or wood pulp.
