Abstract
8419. Karlin, H. B. April 4. Automatic gear.-Relates to a power system of constant output in which part of the system supplies exhaust steam for industrial purposes, and consists in means for regulating the steam supply to this part in accordance with variations in the exhaust pressure. Referring to Fig. 1, a piston 8 is normally balanced between an adjustable spring 9 and the pressure of exhaust steam admitted at 10. The piston is connected as shown through a second weaker spring 17 to a lever 3 connecting the admission valve 1 to a centrifugal governor 5. The opening of the valve 1 is adjusted automatically with varying exhaust pressures. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the piston 8 is linked to the shunt rheostat 22 of a continuous-current dynamo driven by the engine.
