Abstract

498,639. Gas turbines. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. March 18, 1938, No. 8362. Convention date, March 18, 1937. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas turbine 1 drives an electric generator 5 which provides electricity for the motor 6 of a vehicle. The output is regulated by a fuel valve 7 and the air supply from the compressor 3 is correspondingly adjusted by varying the speed of the turbine, compressor, generator set independently of the output. This is done by varying the field excitation of the generator. In the form shown, the field excitation is varied by means of a rheostat 16, which, through a servomotor 14, 15, is controlled by devices 10, 11 responsive to the flow, respectively, to the fuel at the point 12 and the air at the point 13. The rheostat may be under the control of a thermostat in the outlet of the combustion chamber, or, a thermostat in the exhaust of the turbine in conjunction with a device responsive to the initial gas pressure or the speed of revolution. Further, the rheostat may be controlled by a speed-governor in conjunction with a device responsive to the flow of fuel. To expedite the adjustment, the excitation may be given an initial variation before varying the fuel supply.
