Abstract

5160. Pieper, H. March 7. Gas and like engines, governing in. In electromechanical transmission systems for automobiles &c. comprising a heat motor coupled to a dynamo the armature of which is in paralled with a buffer battery, an arrangement is described for regulating the admission of gas to the heat motor consisting in the combined action of a centrifugal governor and a change-speed lever upon the throttle valve in the motor admission pipe. In this system the dynamo acts as a generator on light load, and the valve admitting fuel to the motor is so controlled that just sufficient gas is admitted (1) normally to drive the system and maintain the batteries at full charge, (2) to drive the motor at maximum speed on heavy load, (3) to drive the motor on light load and charge the batteries evenly. The beat motor 1 is coupled directly to the dynamo 2. The current of the battery is sent to'the dynamo by means of the starting-switch 5. The excitation of the dynamo and hence its speed is regulated by the rheostat 6. A centrifugal governor 15 rotated by the motor operates the admission valve of the heat motor through links 14, 13 against the motion of a spring 16 connected to the lever 8. At each speed, defined by the position of the lever 8, there corresponds a particular variation of speed between the limits of which the action of the governor completely opens or closes the valve 12. Thus, when the system accelerates and charges the battery, the gas supply will be gradually cut off, and when the speed falls, due to a heavy load, the valve is opened, the maximum opening being when the dynamo is on the point of working as a motor.
