Abstract

1400. Stansfield, W. Jan. 19. Ash-pans and ash-guards.-An ash-guard or tidy for domestic fire-places consists of an inclined plate 1, Fig. 1, supported by side plates 2, 3, or otherwise. This is placed in the ash-pit of a domestic fire-place with its upper edge near the underside of the bottom front bar and its lower edge resting on the hearth near the rear wall of the ash-pit, so as to leave the whole of the hearth open to view and to keep it free from ashes &c. The plate 1 may be fitted, as shown in Fig. 2, with side and rear plates 2, 3, 4 so as to form an ash-pan, in which a cindersifter 5 may be hung by means of hooks 7. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 6606/87 and 22,266/01.
