Grates.-An adjustable barless grate consists of side plates or jambs 2, 2<a> with widely slotted plates or brackets 4, 4a for attachment to the side plates 3 of the fireplace and carrying side portions 7, 7a of the base-plate or bottom grate, which are connected together by a centrepiece 8. An adjustable hinged grate 10, also constructed in three pieces, has pivots taking into specially formed slots g in the side plates so that it may be set vertically, or horizontally as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The side plates are also connected by an extensible bar or plate 13.
