Abstract

Hydrogen; oxygen.- In apparatus for purifying electrolytic gases, the e explosion t r a p placed between the supply and the purifier is sealed by the condensation water collected in a second trap beyond the purifier. The preferred constructions of t h e purifier and of the first trap are described in the concurrent Specifications 21,600/11 and 21,601/11, [Class 135, Valves &c.], respectively. The purifier is used on each half of the electrolytic plant, so that hydrogen is purified from oxygen a n d oxygen from hydrogen. The g a s to be treated. coming from an ordinary washer, may be passed through a suitable meter a, Fig. 1, before reaching the inlet pipe c of the first trap d. In its preferred construction, this trap comprises an outer vessel d', Fig. 3, with an inner receptacle d<2> having inlet and outlet connexions d<3>, d<4> for pipes c, e. Water is supplied at a convenient point d<8> in the base of the trap, and, rising through perforations in a false bottom d<5>, flows out through perforations d<6> in the wall of the inner chamber d<2> and under a surrounding bell d', whence it fills the outer vessel and passes out through an overflow d<9>. The purified gas leaving the purifier f passes to the second trap h, Fig. 4, which somewhat resembles the first; the walls, however, are not perforated, and the water in the seal is maintained by the condensation of the vapour carried by the gas from the purifier. The overflow is conducted through a pipe h<3> to supply the first trap d.
