Acetylene. - In an acetylene generator, the generating-cylinder a is supplied with water by the pipe b terminating in the vertical pipe c and funnel d, preferably fixed to the gas holder e. The pipe f communicates with the annular water space of the gas holder e, and is connected to the counterweighted swivelling pipe g, the outlet end of which is normally above the level of the water in the gas holder. As the bell h of the gas holder descends, a projection on the bar i attached to the bell depresses the outlet end of the pipe g, and water drops into the funnel d and passes to the generator. As the bell rises, the outlet end of the pipe g rises, and the flow of water stops ; or the inlet part of the water-supply pipe may be so constructed instead of the outlet. The funnel d is provided with a cover n pivoted on a rod o, which may be a continuation of the rod i, and has a twist or other equivalent to move the cover n over the funnel when the outlet end of the pipe g is above the water level. The gas passes from the gas holder by a perforated pipe into and through the purifier l to the main outlet tap m. The pipe r has a three-way cock s by means of which the generator is connected with the outside atmosphere when the gas holder is shut off.
