Abstract

11,760. Le Croix, X. de. May 22. Acetylene.-Relates to a generator having means for drying, storing, and regulating the pressure of the gas, cooling the carbide, &c. The carbide is contained in truncated metal cones 13 perforated along their median lines 15 and supported one above another by spider frames in cages 10, 11 secured by bayonet joints in bells 8. Flanges 9 on the bells 8 rest on open cylinders 5 rigidly secured in a bell 2 supported by pulleys 20 and guides 21 above a water tank 1. The bells 8 are connected by pipes 18 fitted with valves 16, 19 and unions 17 to the bell 2. A valved pipe 3, opening above the water in the tank 1, conducts the gas away. The bell 2 may be fitted with a receptacle to carry weights for adjusting the pressure of the gas. In operation, when the valves 16, 19 are opened, the bell 2 falls until water enters the cones 13, the production of gas which ensues continuing until the bell 2 rises and lifts the carbide out of: the water. The gas is dried and purified in its upward passage through the cones 13. The water which rises between the cylinders 5, 8 cools the carbide. If the production of gas becomes excessive, the gas bubbles out of the bells 8, and is stored in the bell 2.
