Abstract

4714. Sarginson, W. W. March 7. Acetylene. - Apparatus for the automatic production of acetylene by the regulated supply of water to carbide comprises a vessel divided into two portions a, c, by a diaphragm b and having at the base carbide chambers d, d'. These chambers are formed in a cylinder passing from side tu side of the chamber c and divided centrally by a diaphragm b<1>. The ends of the carbide chambers are closed by covers i, fixed by cramp screws g and bars h, and each is fitted with a carbide tray e which can be withdrawn, when exhausted, by means of a handle f. The carbide chambers are connected to the upper part of the chamber c by iron pipes j<1111> provided with stop-cocks k; the level of the upper opening of one pipe is higher than that of the other. Tubes j<a> are connected to the tubes j<1111> and have relief valves n, .which allow the escape of gas from the carbide chambers should the cocks k be closed or gas generated through damp or leakage of water. The upper and lower chambers a, c are connected by a pipe j. The evolved gas passes from the chamber c through a pipe j<1>provided with a cock, which may have a trip-lever k<1>, if a separate gas-holder is used. A cock k<11> is also connected to the pipe j<1> to permit the escape of air when the apparatus is being started. A relief tube j<11> provided in the chamber c and connected by a smaller tube j<111> to the gas outlet l serves to conduct the " after make " of gas to the holder, when a separate holder is used. Water is drawn off from the tank, when required, by a cock k<111>. In operation, the cock of the tube j<1111>, having its upper orifice at the lower level, is opened first; when the level of the water has sunk below the level of the orifice of the second tube, the cock of that tube is also opened. The evolved gas passes up the tubes j<1111> to the chamber c and is thereby washed. The carbide chambers are exhausted in succession.
