Abstract

8369. Keith, D. S. April 10. Acetylene.-Relates to generating-apparatus in which the carbide or other solid is automatically fed into the water or other liquid. It consists of three parts, a combined generator, cooler, and purifier A, a gas holder B, and a feed hopper C. The generator is divided by a perforated horizontal partition into two parts, the upper of which forms the tank for the gas bell 7. It is provided with a liquid feed tube 24, with liquid overflow and gas inlet tube 22, covered with caps 23, with a gas outlet tube 25, and with a central tube 28 dipping below the partition. The lower part is provided with overflow pipes 4, 5, and with an inclined bottom 27 leading to a sludge outlet. The bell has upwardly-projecting sides to form a water space for adjustably weighting it according to the pressure required. It is also connected to a vertical rod 8, to which a lever 9 pivoted at 11 is attached. This lever is provided with a weight 12 which can be turned on a hinge 11<A>, and is connected by a rod 13<A> to a double cone valve 15. The hopper is provided with a downward extension to form a water seal for it, with a closed filling- opening 20, and with a central tube 17 forming with an inner tube 19 a liquid seal for the ends of a cap 14. In operation, liquid is charged through the tube 24 until it stands at the heights indicated in both parts of A. The solid employed is charged into the hopper, and a small quantity caused to fall into the liquid. The gas is then automatically generated, according to the rise and fall of the bell, and is washed and cooled by the water in the generator. The amount of gas in the holder is always very small, never exceeding one inch in depth. A safety blow-off pipe 6 is connected to the gas bell.
