7234. Watson, S. G. April 6. Acetylene.-Relates to apparatus for automatically generating acetylene and other gases. A carbide &c. chamber D is connected by a cock h' and pipe H to a tank A containing water or other liquid, and is also provided with a gas pipe b<4> delivering below an inverted tank A<1> in the tank A. A hollow cylinder B is fixed in the tank A, with its upper open end at the height of the liquid level and its lower closed end extending through the bottom as shown. An extension b<1> of the pipe b<4> passes a short distance up the cylinder B, and is provided with a cap or cover b<2> having openings b<3>. Another cover E, adapted to dip into mercury &c. supplied through a pipe m<1> to the cylinder B, is suspended by a rod e<1> from a hinged or pivoted lever F carrying a friction roller f<3>, which is automatically engaged by the tank A' to raise the cover E and open the gas outlet, or is disengaged to close the outlet. When the outlet is closed, the gas accumulating in the chamber D forces back the liquid through the pipe H, through which also any excess of gas escapes into the tank A<1>. When the outlet is closed, the chamber D can also be recharged &c. In a modification, the liquid-supply pipe is controlled by the suspended cover and mercury trap, and is arranged like the gas pipe described above, but without the perforated cover. The gas pipe then extends above the liquid level in the tank A'.
