The generation of the gas is automatically regulated in accordance with the pressure in the holder. The generator proper consists of a water tank a, containing one or more generating-chambers b, each of which is fitted with a cover bell c. The carbide is contained in a series of tapering trays g, fitting into one another and into a casing g<1> perforated at the bottom. A dummy casing h fills the space above the carbide so as to exclude air. Water is supplied to the generating-chambers from a pocket e through the pipes f, f respectively. In the pocket e is arranged a regulating-chamber e<1>, communicating by one pipe with the water tank, and by another pipe with a chamber d' in communication with the gas holder. When the gas in the holder attains a certain pressure, the flow of water from the tank into the pocket, and from the latter into the generating- chamber, is by these means suspended. Gas leaving the generator by the pipe d is conducted through a water seal in the chamber d<2>, and thence by the pipe d<5> into the holder. The gas holder consists of a bell k contained in a tank j and having a central tube k<1> working on an upright rod l, and a tube n<1> formed with an orifice n<2> near its lower end and telescoping upon a safety escape pipe n. When the bell rises above a certain level, the pressure of the gas is automatically increased by a suspended weight n<3>, so as to stop the supply of water to the generator in the manner above described. From the holder the gas is conducted through a purifier, consisting of a cylindrical chamber o, fitted with a perforated basket o' for containing the purifying-material and surrounded by a casing closed by a cover s and by a bell r<1> dipping into a water seal.
