Acetylene.-When the acetylene generator shown in section in Fig. 2 is in action, water rises from the tank a through a spring-controlled valve l into the vessel c, and passes into the carbide-holder d through holes in its vertical walls. The gas generated escapes through a pipe w into the gasholder b and raises it, when the pressure is sufficient, so that the carbide is withdrawn from the water. Both ends of the pipe j through which the gas may be drawn off are raised to the level of the upper edge of the tank u, and a cock j<1> for the withdrawal of water is also provided. The carbide holder d is detachably connected to the cover e of the vessel c by hooks y, and is fitted with internal perforated metal strips s over the holes in its walls. The cover e is secured in position by means of a screw q and a bridge-piece, the joint being made airtight by means of a packing-ring. Vertical rods, fixed to the top of the tank a and connected at their upper ends by a horizontal rod, act as guides for rollers mounted on the gas holder b, and as supports for pulleys which carry a cord for connecting a counterpoise to the screw q. The motion of the holder b is further steadied by rollers k which bear against the tank a. The valve l opens when the carbide-holder d is secured in position.
