Suitable transmission mechanism and clutches enable the turbines and internal-combustion engines to be used alternatively. In a two-shaft installation, each shaft a is coupled directly to t turbine b, and indirectly by a clutch and reduction-gearing k to an internal - combustion engine c. When this is running, the turbine b runs idle. In a modification, there is onlv one internal - combustion engine to two turbines, and this engine may be arranged either in front of, or behind the turbines. The clutch may be either of the friction or magnetic type.
