Abstract

13,864. F÷ttinger, H. June 23, 1905, [date applied forunder Patents Act, 1901]. Turbines-Mechanism for transmitting power consists. of a primary turbine or centrifugal pump on a driving-shaft, and a secondary turbine on the driven shaft so arranged that the conduit system is closed and forms part of a common casing. In certain cases, guide-passages are inserted in the system. The operative fluid passes from the primary to the secondary turbine, its unutilized enery being used again in the primary. Fluids of high specific gravity and at high temperatures can be used in this apparatus. By coupling the driving-shaft to the engine shaft of a ship, and the driven shaft to the propeller shaft, the latter can be regulated or reversed without controlling the prime mover. This method of reversing and gearing of two shafts is of general application. A simple form of apparatus is shown in Fig. 4, the fluid passages of the primary turbine I and of the secondary II both rotating. The part 4 of the passages is stationary. For reversing, the passages 35,36 in the non-rotating part of the example shown in Fig. 16, are capable of the necessary adjustment. The apparatus can be water-cooled by enclosing it in a special casing. Fig. 18 shows a form for powerful reducing and reversing transmission. When running ahead, the liquid passes from the primary 53 by the channels 54, 55 to the secondary 56 ; for going astern, the liquid passes from the turbine 57 through the fixed pieces 58, 60 of the secondary passages 59, 61 and then back through the fixed part 62. The primary and secondary turbines represented by T in Fig. 19 connect the propeller shaft II and the engine shaft I. Various other arrangements embodying the same principle are described in the Specification.
