Abstract

6861. Fottinger, H. March 22. [Addition to 13,864/06.] Combined - flow type; reversing.- Hydraulic powertransmission apparatus, comprising primary and secondary turbines arranged so as to form a hollow ring, is provided with means for altering the speed and direction of running of the secondary turbines. As shown in Fig. 1, the motive fluid flows from the primary turbine 1 through a stationary guide-blade rim, the blades of which consist of two parts. The inner part 5 is fixed, and the outer part 6 rotatable, so that the fluid can be directed to the secondary turbine in a clockwise direction or anti-clockwise, the blades being adjustable in common by a number of cranks 8. For great reaction in forward running and small reaction when reversed the blades are shaped as shown in section in Fig. 2. To improve the admission to the secondary turbine, flexible members 10, 11, Fig. 3, are fixed to the axis of the guide-blades and rest against the stationary part 6; or flexible plates 13 capable of a common adjustment may be fixed to the stationary parts as shown in Fig. 4. Axially sliding members 14, Fig. 5, consisting of two passages 15, 16 for forward and reverse running respectively, are moved between two cylindrical surfaces on the secondary turbine 2 and the casing. Distributing-slides 17 actuated by fluid pressure, as shown in Fig. 8, have passages suitable for a variable number of stages. When used in conjunction with the passage 18, a strong reaction in two stages for forward running is obtained, while for reverse there is one stage of smaller reaction. Both forward and reverse running may be obtained through two stages by the sliding member 22, Fig. 11, where the blades 23, 25, 27 are used for forward running and the blades 24, 26, 28 for the reverse.
