Abstract

Driving-arrangements for screw propellers; vibrations, preventing or damping. - When propeller shafts of ships are driven by internal-combustion engines, the arrangement of parts is such that the critical speeds of the secondary oscillations of the whole plant are integral multiples of the lowest critical speed of the primary oscillations. This is effected by placing the fly-wheel D, Fig. 3, near the tail-shaft coupling and remote from the engine A, or by dividing the mass into two fly-wheels d<2>, d<1>, placed as shown in Fig. 4.
