6757. Archer, E. H. March 17. Heads.-Kegs or barrels formed of sheets of two or more ply veneer cemented together have a metal hoop or edging a secured round the outer edges of the body b by rivets c or other means, so that the edging projects beyond the end or ends of the body, the projecting strip being then turned over by means of a machine to press upon the edges of the lid or bottom d and keep it in position. Prior to the turning- over of the strip, a wire e or, in a modification, a ring of veneer, may be laid round the edge of the lid. In further modifications, a second metal hoop is secured to the edges of the lid or bottom, the edges of the two hoops being then rolled together to give a fastening ; also one or both hoops may be replaced by metal tabs which, in the case of the hoop attached to the lid or bottom, may extend completely across the lid &c., acting as a reinforcement.
