5473. Murphy, T. C., and Bett, J. M. March 4. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Motor or power units.-In an arrangement of two motors connected together by a differential gear for driving the propeller of an aeroplane, means are provided on the motor shafts for preventing a motor that has stopped from being driven in the reverse direction by the active motor. The motors 1, 2 drive the shafts 3, 4, carrying bevel-wheels of a differential gear, the casing 9 of which is provided with a sprocket-wheel 11 geared to the propeller shaft. The shafts 3, 4 are provided with ratchet-wheels 24, 25, adapted to be held by pawls to prevent the reverse movement of the motor that is inoperative. In order to start the motors by turning the propeller, clutch members 16, 17, mounted on feathers on the shafts 3, 4, are brought into engagement with the clutch members 20, 21 on the differential casing 9. The clutches also serve to start one engine by the power of the other.
