Motor power plant.-The propeller shaft 34 on an aeroplane is driven by two or more separate engines 30, 31 through free-wheels which may be converted into fixed wheels. By this means, stoppage of one engine does not affect the other engine, and by fixing the free-wheel the stopped engine may be started by the moving engine. One form of free-wheel is shown in Fig. 2. The sprocket-wheel 44 is mounted freely on the shaft 47, and has internally-cut ratchet teeth engaged by pawls carried by a collar 45 keyed to the shaft 47. The sprocketwheel may be fixed to the shaft by a sliding collar 50, formed with keys 55<a> which engage with slots in the wheel 44 when the collar 50 is moved along the shaft 47 to which it is keyed. A disk 49, with leather washer 48, is placed between the collar and the sprocket-wheel, and is connected to the collar through pins 52 surrounded by springs 51. By pressing the disk against the wheel 44 by moving the collar 50, the wheel 44 is gradually fixed for restarting the engine.
