Oppositely-running rotor type; driving and transmission, mechanism, special applications of. -Relates to a combination of electrical and mechanical transmission gearing for marine geared turbine installations of the type having oppositelyrunning rotors, such as the Ljungstr÷m type. For ahead working, one of the turbine rotors tranmits half the turbine power through a pinion 6, wheels 7, 8, and pinions 9, 10 to the wheel 19 which is connected to the propeller shaft, while the other turbine rotor drives an electric generator 2 and transmits its power electrically to motors 22, 23 driving pinions 20, 21 gearing also with the wheel 19. The pinions 20, 21 may be dispensed with. the motors 22, 23 being connected to the shafts of the wheels 7, 8. For astern working, clutch 5 is disconnected, and the electric transmission only is used, racing of the disconnected rotor being prevented by a brake worked by electromagnetic induction or the like, or by using this rotor to drive an auxiliary generator 4 in support of the generator 2. A flexible connexion between the wheels 7, 8 and the pistons 9, 10 is shown in Fig. 4, the wheels 7, 8 having a castellated connexion with flexible shafts 11, 12 which pass through the pinions 9, 10 and carry at their outer ends coupling flanges or clutches 17, 18 engaging members on the shafts of the pinions 9, 10. These clutches may be used instead of the clutch 5.
