2151. Furnival, H., Furnival, S., and Furnival, F. S. Jan. 28. Cylinder offset machines; gripper mechanism.-A flat-bed printing-machine, of the type which is capable of use as an ordinary flat-bed machine or as an offset machine, is constructed with the off-set blanket cylinder fitted with grippers which hold the sheet supplied by a feed-board when used as an ordinary machine, and transfer the sheet to grippers on an impression cylinder when used as an off-set machine. As shown, the cylinder A is provided with grippers B actuated by a lever arm b<1> and stationary cam b ; when used as an off-set machine, the grippers B transfer the sheets, after passing the printing-line, to grippers D on an impression cylinder C. The grippers D are opened to receive the sheets by a cam d and to deliver them by a cam d'. A stripper J, actuated by a cam j, and a fixed stripper F deliver the printed sheets on to tapes G or other delivery mechanism, and rollers E support the sheets as they pass to delivery. When used for direct printing, the cylinder C and cams d, d' are put out of action, and the cylinder A, fitted with an impression blanket, coacts with a bed carrying a litho stone or plate, or type.
