To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. CORNWALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rye, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to'printing presses and, so far as regards certain aspects of the invention, it relates to rotary printing presses which print directly from forms or from an offset surface or from both s multaneously, but in other aspects thereof the invention may be applicable to other kinds of printing presses.
Objects of the invention are to provide a printing press which will give a direct impression from the forms or which Wlll give an offset impression, or which will give a perfecting impression, combining these two, and havin the facilities for regulating and adjusting t e inking mechanism and also the damping mechanism, when such mechanism is used, as may be best suited for the par-' ticular work which the press is doing; to provide adequate inking devices so that the direct impression and the offset impresslon may be used'to the best advantage; to provide for controlling the impression-controllin mechanism and the inking mechanism witi respect to each other and with respect to the press. These and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part morefully appear hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and formin a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment o the invention, the same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a press constructed in part in accordance with the princi les of the invention, Fig. 2 is a longitii inal sectional elevation corresponding generally to Fig. 1; Fig. 3is a fragmentary elevation showing the main parts of the inking mechanism; Fig. 4 is a fragmentar the main parts'of the amping mechanism; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary transverse sectlon on the line A-B of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view on the ins C-D of Fig. 3; Figs. 7 and 8 are perspective views of portions of theink-controllin mechamm; Fig. 9 is a diagrammatic view relatelevation showing the said forms being further, shown herein as two in number and are indicated respectively by the reference numerals 3 and 4. The form cylinder may also be provided, if desired, with ink slabs which may be used in connection with the inking rolls to secure a very thorough and uniform ink distribution, and in the present embodiment two such ink slabs 5 and 6 are shown upon the form cylinder.
A suitable ofl'set surface is provided upon the surface of the cylinder 2 and is shown herein as a blanket According to certain features of the invention the offset cylinder makes a plurality of revolutions for each revolution of the form cylinder. In the present embodiment, the two cylinders are shown suitably geared together, the offset cylinder making for each revolution of the form cylinder as many revolutions as there are forms upon the form cylinder The intermeshin .gears of the two cylinders are indicated% the reference numerals 8 and 9.
For convenience the offset cylinder 2 is' shown set back or cut away opposite the inking slabs in order to clear same in passing. A suitable driving mechanism is provided and in the form shown herein comprisesa pinion 10 carried u n the shaft 11 meshing with the ar 9 0 the cylinder 1. The shaft 11 carrles also a fast and loose pulley 12 from which a belt may be run to a suitable source of power.
Suitable automatic means are provided, according to certain features of the invention, for causing the press to give an impression direct from the form upon the impression-receiving material passing between the cylinders, or an offset impression upon the said material, or a perfecting 1mpression whereby both sides are printed simultaneously, one side bein printed direct from a form upon the orm cylinder while the other side is printed from the offset surface, which has previously received its inked impression from one of the forms upon the form cylinder. It will be understood that the forms need not necessarily be on separate plates, but two or more forms may be upon a single plate while on the other hand a plurality of plates may go to make one form. The term form is used herein rather with the meaning of a portion of composition carried by a printing surface and adapted to be printed as a unit, as for instance a portion of the composed matter which is offset upon the offset cylinder and then printed upon the sheet, or a portion of such matter which is designed to be printed directly upon the sheet from the form cylinder.
The invention contemplates further providing adequate inking mechanism to give the best results with the various ways of using the press above outlined and also means for controlling the inking mechanism so as to best adapt it for the particular work which the press may be doing at a given time.
The control of the press as to the manner of printing is effected, in the illustrated embodiment, by automatic sheet-controlling or sheet-taking means, which may be set to take a sheet at each revolution of the offset cylinder or to take a sheet after a plurality of revolutions of the offset cylinder. With the illustrated mechanism, if a sheet is fed to the printing couple at each revolution of the offset cylinder a direct impression from each of the forms upon the form cylinder will be made upon one side of the sheet. If a sheet is fed after a plurality of rotations of the offset cylinder, that is, after every second rotation of the offset cylinder, one of the forms upon the form cylinder will contact with the offset surface on the offset cylinder and impress the same and upon the next rotation, if a sheet is taken, the offset surface will print the adjacent side of the sheet. The second form upon the form cylinder will simultaneously therewith print directly an impression upon the other side of the sheet, the sheet thus receiving a per-- fected impression, an offset upon one side and a direct upon the other. If, however, instead of a second form u on the form cylinder an impression sur: ace is mounted thereon, a non-perfecting offset impression will be obtained in the last instance, as will be obvious. As the forms may be detachably mounted upon the form cylinder these different arrangements are easily effected.
The particular form of sheet-controlling means herein shown comprises grippers 13 carried upon the offset cylinder 2, said gripper being mounted upon a shaft 14. Suitable actuating devices for the said grippers are provided and in the form herein shown the said devices comprise means for actuating the gripper at such time or in such position with reference to the other sheet handling devices as to take a sheet or to actuate the gripper at such time or in such position with reference to said devices that it cannot take the sheet, although so far as regards many features of the invention it is immaterialwhether the timing of the grippers be thus changed or they be held out of action altogether. If desired a gripper action of the general type or specific form shown in United States Patent No. 857,331 'may be used, wherein the gripper mechanism is positively held out of action upon each rotation of the offset cylinder when it is not desired to take a sheet.
In the particular form of gripper actuating devices herein shown, an arm 15 is fixed to the shaft 14'and its free end bears upon a stationary cam 16 suitably mounted upon the pres structure. There is also shown concentrically mounted with the cam 16 a movable cam shape 17 which rotates about its center. The cam 17 is actuated through an arm 18 fixed with reference thereto and a pivoted link 19 going from the said arm to a bell crank lever 20. The free end of the lever 20 is in operative relation with a cam disk 21, shown herein as mounted upon the shaft of the form cylinder 1. The said disk 21 has a cam depression 22 therein and slidably mounted adjacent thereto a vane 23. Suitable mean for fixing the said vane in any adjusted position are provided, as for instance the bolt-and-slot mounting 24. \Vhen the vane 23 is slid into register with the cam depression 22 the disk 21 is then substantially concentric and the lever 20 receives no movement therefrom. The cam shape 17 is then in position (see Fig. 10) so as not to affect the relation of the cam 16 and the arm 15. The gripper is then actuated in proper position to take a sheet at each rotation of the offset cylinder 2. Vhen the vane 23 is slid back out of register with the depression 22 the lever 20 is actuated and the cam shape 17 is moved into a' position where it affects the relation of the cam 16 and arm 15 (see Fig. 1). It will be seen therefore that, in the illustrated embodiment, at each alternate revolution of the offset cylinder the timing of the gripper action is changed and the gripper would not be in position to take the sheet.
Any suitable means for feeding the sheets to the grippers may be provided and such means are herein shown as comprising a hand feed board 25. Suitable front stops 26 are also provided which may be arranged to operate in harmony with the gripper mechanism. Suitable delivery devices, of any convenient or approved form, may be provided and there is shown herein a delivery cylinder 27 and a fly 28 (shown only in part). The cylinder 27 is shown geared to the offset cylinder 2. Suitable driving devices for the fly are shown, indicated by the reference numeral 29. If it is desired to change the timing of the fly this may be done by changing the driving gears in a well-known manner or it may be effected otherwise if desired.
The invention contemplates, according to some of its features, an inking mechanism for one of theforms on the form cylinder and another inking mechanism for another of the forms on the form cylinder. Thus, one inking mechanism serves to ink a form which prints directly upon the paper while another inking mechanism serves to ink a form which prints upon the offset surface and that impression is in turn transferred or imprinted from the offset surface upon the sheet. It will thus be seen that two inks may be used varying in stiffness or other characteristics, as may be desired to secure a uniform imprint upon both sides of the sheet. The said inking mechanisms may also in some respects beindependent of each other and in some respects interdependent, or in other words they may have for some purposes a separate control and for other PIIIINSGS be jointly controlled from a single controlling means. This will be useful in many cases and there may be cited, by way of example, the need sometimes of tripping the entire inking mechanism while at other times it may be convenient to put one of the mechanisms out of operative relation to the form cylinder while another is left in operative relation to the form cylinder. This latter would be useful where it is desired to make a run printing on one side only. This may in certain cases be found especially convenient when a short run is made. In the embodiment illustrated herewith, one inking mechanism or inking system is shown as comprising a fountain 30, a distributer roll 31, ductor rolls 32 and form rolls 33. The other inking mechanism is shown as comprising an inking fountain 34, a distributer roll 35, ductor rolls 36, and form rolls 37. Means are provided for causing each system to come into operative relation with its own ink slab and form and for holding it out of operation with the other ink slab and form. The form of such means herein shown comprises a cam 38 with which coacts a. friction roll 39 upon one arm of a bell crank lever 40, the other end of the said lever being suitably connected to what may be termed a cam plate 41. The form rolls are shown herein as being pivotally mounted at suitable points, such as 42, and as the cam plate 41 is moved up and down in its guides'43, it will be seen that it serves to lift the form rolls away from the form cylinder or permits them to come down into operative relation with the form cylinder (see especially Fig. 3). A cam 44 has in operative relation therewith a friction roll 45 upon a bell crank lever 46 which is operatively connected to the cam late 47 for the other inking mechanism and operates in the same way to automatically move it. into operative rela tion with its form and ink slab and out of operative relation with the other form and ink slab. There are also provided means for throwing off both inking mechanisms from the form cylinder or for selectively throwing ofl' either while leaving the other in operative relation therewith, that is in such relation that it will ink its own form and contact with its own ink slab while keeping away from the other form and the other ink slab. In the form of such means herein shown there is included a sliding bar 48 having thereon cam shapes 49 and 50. The said-cam shapes are shown constructed and arranged to move the cam plates 41 and 47 individually or together, so as to actuate the form rolls as the bar 48 is slid backward and forward in its bearings (see especially Fig. 3). For the purpose of sliding the bar 48 backward and forward a link 51 is shown pivoted thereto and also to an arm 52 fast upon a shaft 53. Fast with shaft 53 is also shown a latch lever 54 having a suit able curved rack 55 so that the lever may be held in any position to which it may be moved.
Referring to the diagrammatic showing in Fig. 9 of the drawing the relative ositions of the friction rolls in the cam p ates with respect to the cams upon the sliding bar are indicated respectively by the letters a, b, 0 and (I. At the positions a, and referring for convenience to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the left hand inking mechanism is thrown out while the right-hand one is on. At the positions 7) both mechanisms are on, at the positions 0 the left-hand mechanism is on and the righthand off, and at the positions 0! both inking mechanisms are thrown off.
Means are also contemplated by the invention in certain of its aspects for tripping the impression, for tripping the impression and the inking mechanisms, and in connection with the same, means for restoring the inking mechanisms to operative relation while the impression is still held off, when this latter arrangement is desired. In the forming of the said means herein shown there is provided a foot plate 56 mounted upon a rod 57 pivotally connected to a lever 58. The lever 58 is shown with a friction roll 59 at the free end thereof upon which rests a lever 60 pivotally mounted upon the wrist pin 61. The wrist pin 61 is carried by an arm 62 fixed upon a shaft 63 which has also fixed thereon an arm 64 connected by an adjustably pivoted link 65 with an arm 66 fixed to a shaft 67 to which is fixed a toothed sector 68. In mesh with the toothed sector 68 is a rack 69. The said rack is shown as munted upon a web 70 which rigidly connects two pillow blocks 71 and 72 slidable upon the machine frame, one of the said pillow blocks serving to journal the offset cylinder 2 and the other the delivery cylinv der 27. The turn buckle 73 in the rod 65 and the ta bolts 74, 75 serve to furnish an exceedingly accurate adjustment for the impression or squeeze between the form cylinder and the offset cylinder. The wrist pin 61 is also connected by pivoted link 76 to a lever 77. The other end of the lever 77 is pivoted to a link 78 also pivoted to an arm 79 carrying a geared sector 80. The geared sector 80 is in mesh with a sliding bar 81 upon which cam shapes 82 and 83 are mounted. The cam shapes 82 and 83 are shown herein as arranged to move into and out of operative relation with the friction rolls upon the cam plates 41 and 47 with which the cam shapes 49 and 50 co-act (see especially Figs. 1, 3, 7 and 8). The swinging arm 60 is shown herein as having a cam slot 84 in which is a wrist pin 85 carried upon a bell crank lever 86 pivoted at 87 and having its free end in operative relation to a cam 88 carried upon a suitable shaft in the machine. The said cam is so shaped that when the swinging arm 60 is in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be swung backward and forward in the upper portionof the cam slot 84 without communicating motion to the arm 60. If the foot plate 56 is pushed downwardly however the wrist pin 85 is then in the bottom of the slot 84 and serves to swing the arm 62 to the left (referring to Fig. 1), the shaft 63 and the connected mechanism to throw off the impression and through the link 7 6 the lever 7 7 and their connected parts heretofore described to throw off the inking mechanism. A suitable latch 89 is rovided in connection with the rod 57 to old the connected parts in the depressed position when desired.
Means are provided for tripping the impression independently without afleeting the inkingmechanism or for causing the inking mechanisms to be restored to operative relation after the impression and inking mechanisms have been thrown off together. In the illustrated embodiment means for effecting these functions are provided, the form of said means shown comprisinga pin-and-hook connection between the link 76 and the lever .77 (see Fig. 1 of the drawings); A suitable handle 90 is provided for lifting the link 76 off the pin 91 fixed to the lever 77. For the purpose of holding the link 76 in either position to which set a flat spring 92 is shown acting upon suitable surfaces upon the end of the said lever near its connection to the pin 61. It will be thus seen if the lever 61 is moved out of connection with the pin 91 that the impression will be tripped without throwing off the inking mechanisms, and if the link 7 6 is moved out of engagement with the pin 91 while the impression is tripped and the inking mechanisms are thrown off that the inking mechanisms may be restored to operative relation with the cylinder without throwing on the impression.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the forms 3 and 4 upon the form cylinder 1 are shown as flexible plates which may be of a material suitable for planographic or surface printing, such as zinc or aluminum. There is shown herein in connection with the form cylinder two dampin r mechanisms indicated generall by the re erence numerals 93 and 94. Suitable devices for controlling the said damping mechanisms so that each will be in operative relation with its own plate and also mechanisms for throwing either or both out of operative relation are provided. The damping mechanisms may be in many of their features of any suitable or convenient form and are each shoun as provided with a fountain and a fountain roll and a vibrator traveling between the said fountain rolls and the form damping set of rolls. As shown herein each form set of damping rolls is yieldingly held to the form by suitable means. In the present embodiment the form of said means shown comprises spiral springs 95 mounted in fixed plates 96 carried by the frame of the machine. the said spring pressing against heads 97 adjustably attached to the plate 98 in which the form damping rolls are mounted. The plates 98 are slidably mounted in suitable supports toward and away from the form cylinder and, as will be understood from the foregoing. are spring-pressed toward the cylinder by the said springs95. One set of the plates 98 is shown connected by pivoted link 99 to one arm of a bell crank lever 100 pivoted at 101 upon the machine frame. The free end of the said bell crank lever co-acts with a suitable cam 102 upon the shaft of the form cylinder (see especially Fig. 4). The other set of supporting plates 98 is pivoted to a link 103 connected to one arm of a bell crank lever 104, the free end of which is in operative relation to a cam 105 also mounted upon the'form cylinder shaft.
It will thus be seen that each set of form damping rolls is controlled to move inwardly to damp their form and is moved away at the proper time from the form cylinder to avoid the ink slabs and the other form by the action of the cams 102, 105 against its springs 95.
For the purpose of throwing out the Water mechanisms independently of the said cams, suitable devices are shown, the illustrated form thereof comprising a foot lever 106 connecting by pivoted link 107 to a lever 108. The free end of the said lever is located to actuate the bell crank lever 100 di rectly and the bell crank lever 104 through a link 109 connected to a bell crank lever 110, the free end of which is in operative relation with the bell crank lever 104. A suitably pivoted arm 111 su ports the other end of the link 109. The oot lever 106 is normally held out of operative position by suitable connections such as the springs 112, and a latch 113 is provided for engagin the said lever and holding it after it has een moved downwardly to throw off the damping mechanisms.
For the purpose of holding off one damping mechanism while the other damping mechanism is permitted to be in operative relation to the form cylinder two latches 114 and 115 are provided. The latch 114 is constructed and arranged so as to be moved to engage a pin 116 upon the bell crank lever 100 and the latch 115 so as to engage a pin 117 on the bell crank lever 104. It will thus be seen that if the lever 106 is actuated to throw off both of the damping mechanisms and either latch 114 or 115 is then swung into engagement with its pin and the lever 106 is then restored to its normal position, one damping mechanism will be held out of operative relation with the form cylinder while the other has been permitted to return to operative relation therewith.
When it is desired to have a transverse vibrating action between the damping rollers so as to secure a more uniform damping of the forms, means therefor may be provided of any suitable or convenient form. A form of such means is herein shown as comprising eccentrics 118 connecting by links 119 and crank arms 120 to .what may be termed the distributer rolls 121 of the form dampin set. The said mechanism, simply as such, however forms no part of the present invention.
A suitable brake and belt shifter may be provided, if desired, and a form of such means is shown in connection with the present embodiment, the lever 122 being'located on one side of the press and connecting by a link 123 with a lever 124. The said lever is connected to the belt shifter 125 and to the fly wheel brake 126.
The operation of the herein-described machine will be understood from the preceding description but a brief statement thereof will now be given.
If it is desired to run the press as a perfecting press, a suitable ink may be supplied to each fountain so that the direct printing form and the form printing by means of the offset surface will each receive a proper inking to give a substantially uniform 1mpression upon bothsides of the sheet. The gripper actuating devices will be set so that the gripper will be actuated in proper position to take a sheet only at every other revolution of the ofiset cylinder. In other words the vane 23 will be moved into the position shown in Fig. 1 so that the lever 20 will be actuated by its roll following into the cam depression 22 and the cam sha e 17 will thus at every other revolution 0 the offset c3 linder swing forward so as to actuate the grippers when not in position to take the sheet. If it is desired to run one side only for the direct impression the gripper-controlling mechanism may be set so that the grippers will take a sheet at every revolution. In other Words, the vane 23 will be moved into the position shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings and the cam 16 will then actuate the gripper mechanism so that a. sheet will be taken at each revolution of the offset cylinder. The lever 54 may also be set so as to throw out the corresponding inking mechanism. Thus the inking mechanism which would serve to ink the form which impresses the ofi'set cylinder would be held out of contact with its form as it passed, while the inking mechanism for the direct plate would ink its form and be automatically lifted away when the other form passed thereunder as usual.
\Vhen it is desired to print upon one side only from the offset cylinder the sheet-taking mechanism will be set so as to take a sheet on every other revolution of the offset cylinder, and again the lever 54 will be set to hold out of operative relation with the form cylinder the proper inking mechanism. The other inking mechanism will then serve to ink its form in the usual manner which in turn will give an impression to they offset cylinder upon the rotation thereof when no sheet is fed and upon the next rotation, when the sheet is taken, the offset cylinder will print upon the sheet, the opposed surface of the form cylinder actingas an impression surface. It will be further understood thateither set of damping rolls may be held out of actionin the manner hereinbefore described, that is by throwing off the damping mechanisms by the foot lever 106, then causing either the latch 114 or 115 to engage its pin, and then releasing the lever 106, it will thus be seen that the corresponding dampin mechanism will be held out ofposition w ile the other is left to act in the usual manner.
lVhen it is. desired to trip the impression and throw off the ink together, this may be done by pressing upon the foot plate 56' which is pushed downward until the latch 80 engaged the notch in the rod 57. The swinging arm 86, which is shown substantially at the right hand of its path of travel in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and swings to the left and back in the upper part of the cam slot 84. When the foot plate 56 is pressed downward however it will be seen that the lever 58 throws the wrist pin 85 u on the lever 86 in the bottom part of the s ot and the swinging arm 60 is then carried to the left (referring to Fig. 1), actuating the arm 62 and through the connected train of mechanism, including the shaft 63, arm 64, link 65 and arm 66, the toothed sector 68 to move the ofiset cylinder and the delive cvlinder away from the impression. Throug the link 76, the lever 77, link 78, and arm 79, the toothed sector 80, which engages the rack teeth upon the sliding bar 81' brings the cam shapes 82 and 83 under their friction rolls upon the cam plates 41 and 47 and throws off both inking mechanisms. As heretofore explained the link 76 may be swung upwardly out of engagement with the wrist pin 91 upon the lever 77, and in this case the impression may be tripped without throwing off the inking mechanisms. It will be also seen that when the impression is tripped and the inking mechanisms are also thrown off in the mainner'hereinbefore indicated that by throwing ofl' the link 76, in the manner described, the inking mechanisms maybe brought back into 0 erative relation with the form cylinder. T is may be useful for various purposes, as for instance, where it is desired to get up color without feeding sheets to impress. It will also be seen that the lever 54 may be used in such case to throw off one inking mechanism while the other is brought into operative relation to ink its form. The manner of using the lever 54 to control the inking mechanisms has been hereinbefore fully described. It will be further understood that while the manner of operating the various devices has been described, that this may be varied and the various controlling mechanisms set in such a manner with respect to each other to secure widely varied uses and effects from the operation of the press.
From all the foregoing it will be understood that a machine has been provided embodying the objects of invention and the advantages hereinset forth, together with other objects and advantages.
The invention, in 'its broader aspects, is not limited'to the particular constructions shown, nor to any particular constructions by which it has been or may be carried into effect, as many changes may be made in the construction without departing from. the main principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
