ROTARY PRINTING-MACHINE.
Application filed March 8, 1913. Serial No. 752,941.
To all whom it may concern 1 .Be it known thatl, CAsrAa I'IERMANN, of
Leipzig-Gross-Zschocher, Kingdom of Sale ony, German Empire, a citizen of the United States of North America, and whose post office address is ,19 Kirchstrasse, Leipzig Gross-Zschocher, Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Rotary Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification This invention relates to rotary printing machines with two cylinders for indirect lithographic printing and has for its object to extend the field of application of such machines by enabling indirect lithographic .it is impossible in the said well known ma-' chine to print "thick rigid metal plates or sheets of'cardboard which must not be bent.
' In order to attain the result'mentioned above,
. plates "and fabric. As moreover in this ma-' the machine according to this invention is characterized by the large cylinder carrying the'form late and an elastic counter-pressure covering being provided with grippers.
so arranged that the sheets fed between the cylinders are delivered fiat with the printed faces upward. Consequently, as. already stated, it is possible to print rigid thick metal plates and cardboard shcetsin the same machine/as flexible paper sheets, metal chine the large cylinder, in addition to the form plate, is provided with an' elastic counter-pressure covering, a further advan tageous use of the same machine is possible as, according to this invention, the small cylinder is rovidedwith a color doctor that can be lifted off, and the rubber covering of the small cylinder can be exchanged for a copper plate. In that case onean'dthe same machine can be used for printing paper sheets and fabric by'the intaglio process, the
sheets again being delivered with the printed face upward. I
The accompanying drawing shows diagrammatically a construction of the machine according to this invention.
'In' the said drawing a is thelarge cylinder covered with a metal form plate (zinc plate) 7), as well as WltlL an elastic counterpressurc covering 0. The moistening device is niarkei l (l and the inking device 0, both being capable of being lifted off in the well known manner. The cyhnder a is provlded within the elastic counter-pressure covering r. with ledges f by means of which the putting on rollers are forced off when the elastic covering passes in front of the inking device and the moistening device Moreover, the cylinder at. carries grippers g and on the delivery side-stripping-Off fingers h are provided. The feed talile is marked 1'. and the support for the stack of printed sheets or plates is marked Zr. The small cylinder Z is provided with an elastic covering m,- and next to the same isarranged an inking device it that can be lifted OE and a doctor 0. A guide roller 7') which canbe slightly raised and lowered relatively to the large cylinder (1, is used in the position of engagement, for guiding when paper sheets Specificationof Letters Patent. Patented Mar, 31, 1914,
and fabrics are printed, while in printing thick metal plates and cardboard sheets, it is lifted off. If indirect lithographic printing is to be done, the color doctor is lifted off, the small cylinder provided with elastic covering and the la'rgewylinder with the zinc plate. The latter is moistened by the moistening apparatus andinked by the inking device and during the rotation of the large cylinder, transfers to the elastic covering of the small cylinder Z which is then printed off on the sheet or plate seized by the gripper 9 between the two elastic coverings of the large and small cylinders. Shortly before the stripping-off fingers h act, the gripper releases the sheet or plate, and the latter is guided in a straight line, with the .rintedface upward, on to the delivery tab e. As shown in the drawing, no bending of the'sheets or plates around the cylinder remove the zinc plateof the ,large cylinder,
to lift off or disengage the moistening apparatus and the inking device of thesame and to bring into engagement the hiking device and color doctor of the small cylinder after its elastic covering has been exchanged for anon-elastic covering such as a copper v plate either etched or prepared in some other manner for intaglio printing.
v What Ido claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,'=is:
1. A rotary printing machine comprising I the coinbination with a large cylinder hairing grippers and an elastic impression surface and adapted to receive a form plate; of a small cylinder adapted to receive in tercliangeably an elastic-transfer surface for indirect lithographic printing from the form plate of said large cylinder or an intaglio printin surface for intagliovprinting when said form plate is omitted from i said large cylinder.
2. -A' rotary printing machine comprising the combination with a large cylinder having grippers and an elastic impression surface and adapted to be provided with a form ing grippers and an elastic impression surface and adapted to receive a form plate; of
a small cylinder adapted to interchangeably receive an elastic transfer surface for litho graphic printing'from said form plate 'or an inta'glio printing surface for intaglio printing when said form plate is omitted and disengageabl inking and moistening devices for said for plate.
4. A rotary printing machine comprising the combination with a large cylinder provided with grippers and an elastic impression surface and adapted to receive a form plate; of a small cylinder adapted to receive interchangeably an elastic transfer surface for lithographic printing from said form plate or an intaglio printing surface for intaglio printing when said form plate is omitted, disengageable moistening and inking devices for said large cylinder and an :7 independent disenga'geable inking device, having a color doctor for said smaller'cyl- 1 I 5. A rotary printing machine compr sing the combination with a large cylinder having grippers and an elastic printing surfaceand adapted to receive a form plate; of a smaller cylinder adapted to interchan eably receive-an elastic transfersurface or lithographic printing from said form plate or an int-aglio printing surface for intagho printing when'said form plate is omitted, and aguide roller movable into operat ve position on the delivery side of the printing couple thus constitute i In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
