Abstract

24,004. Newton, H. E., [Hoe, R.]. Nov. 26. Rotary machines.-Relates to machines which may be used to print in colours or to perfect, as desired. Fig. 1 shows a machine arranged to perfect, but adapted to print in four colours on one side, or to print in two colours on one side and perfect the other side. The forme-carriers 2, 3 are shown provided each with one forme, which may be of the planographic type. The grippers 9 of the cylinder 7 take the sheet from the feed board 31, and print on one side against the forme on the cylinder 2, and then transfer it to the grippers 16 of the cylinder 10 by which it is printed on the other side against the forme on the cylinder3. Another cylinder 11 is arranged against the cylinder 10, and, when perfecting, transfers the sheet from the cylinder 10 to the delivery apparatus 32, 33. The cylinders 3, 11 are in adjustable bearings 6, 14, so that they may be moved into such positions that either the cylinder 10 or the cylinder 11 may be made to co-operate with the cylinder 3 as impression cylinder. When the cylinder 11 is the impression cylinder, the cylinder 3 is driven in the opposite direction, and the cylinder 10 acts as a sheet transfer cylinder, the sheets being printed on the same side in colours. By providing the cylinders 2, 3 with two formes each, the sheet is printed in four colours, the impression cylinders each retaining the sheets for two impressions. The gearing is so arranged that the cylinder 3 may be driven in either direct.on. Fig. 5 shows another form of machine arranged to print in colours. The forme cylinders 2, 3 co-operate with the impression cylinders 7, 10 respectively, and, when printing in colours, the cylinders are driven in the direction shown by the arrows, the sheet being transferred directly from the grippers 9 to the grippers 40 of the cylinder 10. The sheet is delivered by the grippers 31 of the cylinder 32 and passed to the tapes 33. When the cylinders 3, 10 are to perfect the sheet, they are driven in the opposite directions to those shown, and the sheet is transferred from the grippers 9 by a gripper transfer cylinder 41 to a second set of grippers 16 on the cylinder 10. In this case the sheets are delivered from the cylinder 10 by a switch 50. The gearing is so arranged that the cylinders 3, 10 may be driven in either direction. Any suitable means for operating the grippers, as required, may be employed.
