Ends, attaching; opening by cutting or tearing.-A tin is closed air - tight without the use of solder by bending a flange f on the tagger cover around a flange c on the body, suitable asbestos or other packing e being applied, so that a tight joint is formed both at the flattened top edge b and at the flange. The flange c may be formed by turning the top edge of the tin downwards and outwards as shown in Fig. 2; or the outwardly-turned part may be doubled back; or the flange may be pressed out from the body of the tin, as shown in Fig. 4. A cutter may be attached to the outer cover, or a tearing-strip h may be formed in the body and provided with a tongue at the slit j.
