Abstract

5621. Scholz, P. March 6. Opening by tearing.-The tongue 1, Figs. 1 and 4, which is gripped by a key to tear off the lid from a food, tobacco, or like can, box, &c., is formed as an extension of a projection 5 on the edge of the cover, and slits 6 are made at the base so that when the projection is folded into the seam in sealing the box &c., its middle portion 7 can be withdrawn easily by the key without necessitating simultaneous tearing of the metal. In forming the seam, the sides of the portion 7 become somewhat spread so that leakage at this point is prevented. An alternative form of tongue is shown in Fig. 6 for use with a key having two holes or with a tongue-piece having slots which fit over the projections 12.
