Abstract

Spindle apparatus.-The spindles of spinning and roving machines are supported in antifriction bearings arranged between the flyer and the wharl, so that their lower ends are clear of the frame. The spindle 2 carries cones 4<a>, 5<a> which engage with balls in races formed or fixed in a plain tube 1 fixed to the rail 3. One of the cones is fixed and the other removable, and when a jockey cylinder is not used, one or both of the cones are yieldingly held against the balls by a spring 10 arranged between an adjustable cover 9 and an internal split tapered part 8 of the cone which slides on the spindle. The spring is of sufficient strength to counterbalance the weight of the spindle and the downward or upward pull of the driving-band. The recess 12 in the underside of the wharl 11 is engaged by one of a series of removable non-rotatory pins 13, fixed in a swing rail 14 pivoted at 15 so that each pin or set of pins can be swung away from the spindle, which can then be lowered and removed; or the pins may be carried on a slide. The pins are for the purpose of hanging the bands on, when they are thrown off their wharls, or when the ends of new bands are being fastened together. In a modification, the spindle projects through the wharl and enters a cup in the swing rail. The lifting-rail 16 is guided by slides 17, 18 on the fixed rail 3 and swing rail 14 respectively.
