Beat or lift valves.-Excessive cylinder pressure is relieved by raising the inlet or exhaust lift valve from its seat by fluid pressure supplied from the cylinder 4 to the pistons 8 of the dashpots controlling the valves. The fluid-pressure passage 13 is provided with a non-return spring- loaded valve 2. The dash-pot 7 is also provided with a non-return valve 10 fitted with the usual screw adjustment 11 for regulating the air cushion.
