Valves and valve gear. - A separate admission, fluidactuated, lift valve controlled by a governor and initially released, directly or indirectly through a small valve, by the piston is shown in Fig. 1. The piston strikes the plate 2 and raises the flat wedge-shaped valve 1, the movement of which is completed by the steam. The valve spindle allows steam to pass from the cylinder into the recess 6 provided with a governor-controlled cock which connects it with the upper side of the piston 4. The underside is connected with the outer air through an adjustable cock. The piston may strike against a small auxiliary valve which admits steam to raise the inlet valve. A mechanical arrangement for raising or closing the valve may be used as a safety appliance in case of need.
