9611. Auld, J. May 4. Safety-valves.-A safety-valve for steam boilers &c., but more particularly for low-pressure steam, comprises a main valve a, Fig. 1, held closed by the steam pressure, aided preferably by a spring e, and an auxiliary valve k loaded by weights o. The main valve is connected to a piston c in a chamber g, open at the top to the main outlet and communicating through a passage r with the inlet through the auxiliary valve. The auxiliary valve is balanced by a piston l loosely fitting the cylinder m. When an auxiliary valve is opened by excess of pressure, steam flows through the passage r under the piston c and opens the valve a to its full extent, if necessary, thereby affording a quick and full release. In a modification, shown in Fig. 3, intended for very low pressures, say 3 lb. per square inch, the inlet steam acts on the underside of the main valve, and the operating- piston c is arranged above the valve and is loaded preferably by a weight z.
