Abstract

19,797. Seyboth, F. W., and Baumann, E. K. A., [trading as Konstruktionsb³ro Zwickau Seyboth, Baumann, und Co.]. Sept. 5. Valves closing with rush of fluid; lift valves shocks, preventing.-The valve of an automatic emergency cut-off device for steam-pipes or water conduits is arranged perpendicularly to the axis of the pipe, and the valve is actuated by a differential cylinder which is guided by a fixed piston. The valve may be closed by hand by connecting the cylinder to the atmosphere and thereby relieving part of the valve of its pressure. The valve consists of a cylinder which is free to slide on a fixed piston 8, and normally the fluid pressure on the valve is balanced since the fluid on the underside of the valve is connected to a chamber 9 between the cylinder and piston, and to the upper face 15 of the valve, by passages in a hand-operated cock 13. The weight of the valve thus keeps it open, and steam passes through the valve in the direction of the dotted arrows, or water in the direction of the full arrows. In case of a breakage, the pressure on the face 15 is reduced, and the valve is closed by pressure due to increased flux of steam or backflow of water, the water in the chamber 9 serving as a cushion and preventing sudden closing of the valve. The valve may be closed by hand by connecting the chamber 9 through the cock 13 to the atmosphere, the upward pressure on the valve then exceeding the downward pressure.
