Combustion Methods Of Internal-Combustion Engines
(AREA)
Abstract
2411. Griffin, S. Feb. 2. Incandescent igniters; tubes. - An igniting- chamber, containing heat - conserving material, is placed external to the combustion chamber and is connected therewith by a passage controlled by a timing- valve. The valve remains open until the exhaust port is opened to allow the igniting- material to be heated, and to allow the igniting-chamber and passage to be cleared of combustion products. In one construction, a single chamber is connected by two or more passages with a corresponding number of cylinders. The chamber B containing the heat-conserving material d<2> communicates with the cylinder by a passage E controlled by a valve F. The valve may be mechanically actuated to open in every cycle, or may be a screw-down valve which times the ignition by limiting the passage. An auxiliary electric or tube igniter may be used for starting, and may be insulated during normal running by the screw-down valve I.
